Pianist Kaja Draksler, who left her home in Slovenia for jazz studies in Amsterdam, was lucky enough to be noticed at a very early stage in her musical career, partially because of her active live activities and participation in different cross-genre projects. "Out For Stars" is her ambitious work, based on poems by Robert Frost.
"Out for Stars" features a multi-national team of Amsterdam-based musicians and includes such various artists as Dutch reeds veteran Ab Baars, rising Argentinian female sax player Ada Rave, Icelandic singer Björk Níelsdóttir and Latvian vocalist Laura Polence among others. Musically, the album contains a dark mix of piano and reeds free jazz dissonance, pastoral vocals, chamber strings, poetic balladry, Nordic spacey sound and romantic melodicism of the past all presented in almost ideal order, without even a trace of chaos.
Possibly, not a music one will listen to very often, but a great example of successful contemporary post-modernist music, strongly rooted in a tradition.
