About this release
Solar Records 4569955
Recorded live at the Royal Roost, New York, between November 1948 & March 1950.
CD 2 [10-13]: “Adventures in Jazz” CBS-Telecast, New York, January 28, 1949.
CD 2 [14-18]:Rec. Frankfurt Am Main, Germany, November 9, 1956
This release presents, for the first time ever on a single set, Lester Young’s complete broadcasts from the celebrated Royal Roost jazz club in New York, which were made during the period 1948-50. Lester performs on most of these tracks in a quintet format, including trumpeter Jesse Drakes and pianist Junior Mance, plus Kai Winding, Allen Eager and Ella Fitzgerald as guest stars on a couple of jam-session like tunes.
As a bonus, the soundtrack to a rare New York TV show featuring Lester (just the music survives), recorded in 1949 while the saxophonist was engaged at the Roost. As a further bonus, a superb quartet live set presenting Prez in Frankfurt in 1956.
