A lot a living to do with a lot of life
Pat Metheny is well known for his prolific career and ample ability on the guitar. Through numerous albums, concerts, lineups, and so much more, the man has established himself amongst the best jazz guitarists out there. This album, Trio 99>00, forgoes some of the real “fusion” he is known for to transition into a much cooler bop-like structure. The album is composed of a number of rapid-fire, quick going jazz tracks, with he, his bassist, and his drummer all bouncing along Metheny’s colorful compositions of tasty jazz tracks.
There isn’t much more to say about the album. Metheny’s soloing skills, seen in all of his other albums, are still fantastic here; with his incredible mastery of the scales and his great knowledge of his instrument comes a sublime mastery of melody and harmony, as he whips up and down the neck of his guitar along the bass and drum line. This rhythmic support is also great, with Larry Grenadier and Bill Steward lending their rhythmic hand as Metheny weaves his songs. Overall, the album is a tasty jazz album, full of great melodic structure and cool jazzy guitar solos. 3+ stars.
