I believe everyone familiar with modern avant-garde jazz/free improvs scene's younger generation noticed really interesting and talented guitarist Mary Halvorson (she has released several albums).Trumpeter Peter Evans is another brighter artist, collaborated with Mostly Other People Do The Killing between others. Trio's leader drummer Weasel Walter perhaps is best known for his Chicago work in The Flying Luttenbachers.
Trio's album contains six fully acoustic improvs of very fresh sound. Every musician is more than competent one, but what is more important they don't afraid of experimentation with musical ideas,rooted in Anthony Braxton or Derek Bailey.
With some decades long history free-form improvisational jazz isn't free of cliches (even if this music is most unpredictable by its nature).It's always great when every new generation of musicians is trying to break the expectations. Melodic and scratchy, chaotic and very optimistic, this album sound as a breath of fresh air (even if far not everything sounds excellent here). Punk-rock destruction,jazz-rock heaviness,free-jazz quirkiness - all these components are mixed in one refreshable and non-boring brew.
One interesting album from new avant-garde jazz generation's great artists.
