BRAINKILLER picture
Brainkiller (originally a wordplay on the names of its two original members) is a funambolic jazz-prog trio with american Brian Allen on trombone, Jacob Koller on fender rhodes and piano and argentinean drummer Hernan Hecht to provide polyrhythmic intent.

Originally a duo, they morphed into a trio in 2007 to record their first album, eventually released on RareNoiseRecords. Their music draws clues from jazz, progressive rock, zappa-esque songwriting, whilst they offer shambolic and wonderful live performances (the one at the Genoa Jazz Festival in 2010 was epic). Quite unlike anything you'll have heard before.

Sounds like Brainkiller has redefined the meaning of eclectic with their new CD, “Colourless Grreen Superheroes”. Drawing on a multitude of influences, and sometimes radically shifting styles during mid-song, Brainkiller takes you on a ride with many twists and turns, but in the end, it’s a pleasant ride. At first listen, the quick style change-ups may have you thinking of a Zorn-Zappa type pastiche, and there are some similarities, but Barinkiller’s approach is a little more organic and relaxed, and does not come across like an exercise in intellectual posturing as some ADHD type compositions can.

Some of the music that the Killer’s draw upon includes spacey trip-hop, minimalist style nu jazz, early 70s fusion experiments, ambient techno, some moments of free jazz, instrumental art rock and 60s pop exotica artists such as Brian Wilson and George Martin. Much of this album can come across like a soundtrack, and in that respect it reminds me of Black Dog's 90s oddball electronica album, “Music for Adverts”, only with a little Soft Machine and Zappa thrown in too.

Although there is a fair share of laid back moments on here, there are also plenty of opportunities for Brian Allen (trombone) and Jacob Koller (piano, electric piano) to take off on some energetic and free solos. The playing on here is excellent, and the compositions are clever and never boring. This is a good CD for those interested in an eclectic modern fusion of styles.
