Veteran swing tenor saxophonist Joe Thomas finally had an opportunity to lead his first record session in 1979 when he was already 69. Only musically active on an occasional basis since the mid-'50s, Thomas still sounded pretty good at this point, featured in a quartet with pianist Jimmy Rowles, bassist Walter Booker and drummer Akira Tana. Both Thomas and Rowles take vocals and Joe's large tenor sound was still mostly under control. The emphasis is mostly on relaxed material with six swing-era standards (including "Exactly like You," "Body and Soul" and "Charmaine") joined by Thomas' "Dog Food" (mistitled "Raw Meat") and Rowles' "The Lady in the Corner." A historic and enjoyable set that launched the Uptown label.
