Some say they could be called the twisted kids of Kamasi Washington and Sigur Ros, but in fact, polish jazz outfit Niechęć manage to avoid being placed in a niche and offers a fresh and unique approach.

The band’s name translates to “dislike”, which is actually the opposite of how their music affects its listeners. Their hypnotic mixture of jazz, ambient, electronic music and alternative rock can be addictive, as well as the dark, mysterious and at moments hysteric atmosphere they create. What makes them really special is their attachment to Polish Jazz legends like Tomasz Stańko and Krzysztof Komeda, and ability to recontextualize this deeply emotional melodic legacy into suites that balance aggression with grace.

Niechęć emerged in 2011 from a lively free-improv scene that flourished in Warsaw at the time. The musicians have released three albums so far, “Śmierć w miękkim futerku” (“Death In A Soft Fur Coat”) (2012), “Niechęć”

Niechęć, a Polish band from Warsaw, came as a comet with their debut album "Śmierć W Miękkim Futerku" in 2012. Their cinematic mix of alt-rock, jamming, jazz-fusion, post-rock, and free jazz, all well played, with dark melodicism, won listeners by storm. The band's sound, based on heavy keys/electronic passages, sounded attractive not only for jazz lovers but for prog-rock and alt-rock fans as well.

The band's second album "Niechęć"(2016) significantly strengthened their reputation. So, two years later it looked like the right time for a live album release. "Live at Jazz Club Hipnoza", recorded in Southern Poland, opens with a longish heavy jam, which is probably the most problematic song on the album. The band's strong side is its melodic well well-arranged tuneful songs, so the bulky composition (titled "Koniec"("The End")) based on heavy keyboard passages without noticeable development or direction leaves a mixed impression.

Fortunately, things change for the better right after that. After the short introduction, the band offers listeners what they do best - emotionally colored well-crafted songs with a great balance between energy and melodicism.

The program comes almost exclusively from their second studio album, with two exceptions. The almost twelve-minute long "Chmury" is a new song, which will be released on their third studio album, "Unsubscribe", in 2022. It builds tension from the very first piano/sax/keys sounds and continues with the same atmosphere till the end. The eight-minute-long "Transhumanizm" starts as a slow-tempo dreamy lite (at least by the band's standards) electronics piece, but in the second half explodes with expected heavy keys/sax passages. It has never been released on their studio albums until now.

The closer, "Krew"("The Blood"), starts from free jazz sax soloing and continues with the same sax and piano interplay. The album's end is more impressive than "The End" at its beginning.

For newcomers, I would recommend starting from any studio album (I would probably prefer the debut). Any of them is more comprehensive, better edited, and as a whole more attractive. "Live at Jazz Club Hipnoza" could be interesting for the band's fans, who get the possibility to hear the band playing live.

This young Polish band was a complete surprise for me!

On their second album, the selt titled Niechęć (pronounced Niehenti) managed to do the feat of mixing quite disparate things like Post Rock and Jazz Rock and making them work together!

At various times the Jazz Fusion school, which is so strong in Poland, takes us by storm and even I, who do not like Jazz Fusion, just gave up and enjoy their music.

44 minutes of quality music that is worth checking and, even though I didn't hear many new albums in these last two years, one of the best albums released in Poland in 2016!

Sometimes you don’t know what might show up in your mailbox, for instance this odd looking CD that arrived from Polish group Niechec. The strange album cover doesn’t reveal much, but what a great surprise when you give it a spin and all of this exciting and passionate modern jazz-rock comes firing out of the speakers. Because of their frequent use of repeating minimalist type passages, you could put Niechec in the nu jazz genre, but unlike many other nu jazz groups, there is nothing lite and fluffy about these guys, instead, like a lot of music from Poland, this CD is raw and emotional, and the band doesn’t mind raising some fierce noise when it is called for.

The music on here is so eclectic that it is probably best to view the tracks individually to get an idea of what is going on. Album opener, “Koniec”, is a harsh noisy jazz rock number with plenty of rapid change-ups in that style first initiated by the Mr Bungle/John Zorn school of music. On this track Maciej Zwierzchowski reveals his huge baritone sax sound, often playing heavy noire riffs that recall Mel Collins’ work on early King Crimson albums. Tomasz Wielechowski also turns in a fierce atonal solo on the distorted electric piano. The next three cuts reveal Niechec’s interest in a more relaxed electronica flavored post rock groove that recalls Tortoise or Masfel. Track 5, “Krew”, opens with atonal saxophone squawking that alternates with quieter sections and strange demented circus like music.

“Widzenie” uses a repeating piano part that sounds like classic prog rock to which they add a driving drumnbass beat and another free form sax solo. On “Atak”, the band digs heavy into that same ‘crime jazz soundtrack’ sound that inspired much of early King Crimson. Album closer, “Trzeba to Zrobic”, continues with more heavy saxophone sounds, sometimes recalling Doldinger’s first “Passport” album. This number closes with lots of crazy mayhem as the whole band chimes in with collective spiraling chaos.

Niechec is a band that deserves much wider recognition. There are other bands using the same hip modern sounds that these guys use, but the difference is that Niechec knows how to put a complex composition together, as well as a lengthy arrangement that makes sense. There should be a wider market available for these guys, including fans of modern prog rock, the wilder side of today’s jazz rock scene and anyone looking for interesting, eclectic and unpredictable music.

What a cool album cover!

Smierc w miekkim futerku is the debut album of a nu jazz band from Poland, and a good one at that. The approach that they give to the genre is diverse, interesting, and unlike anything I've heard before. Although I admit this is the first nu jazz album I've studied, I'm certainly impressed with the textures and sounds created with the electronics and distorted guitar used with the saxophone.

The feel of the album overall is dark, which can be assumed from a look at the album artwork. The feel ranges from dark, ambient soundscapes created with electronics to tight, rock grooves with a saxophone melody to every band member improvising over the top of each other in a sudden chaotic storm of improvisation. Unconventional time signatures show up occasionally. In retrospect, the amount of what many would consider "jazz" is actually a little sparse here.

Whether or not many would consider it jazz or not, I think it sounds great.
