snobb
The Thing is premier European punk-jazz trio which combining free jazz with garage rock energy and sometimes noisy/dirty sound. When they announced recording the album with Don Cherry step-daughter and popular r'n'b,hip-hop and alternative pop singer Neneh Cherry,it sounded like a bad joke. After the album was released it occupied many European clubs and radio stations for months and the idea doesn't look like joke anymore.
From very first sounds of Neneh original, opener "Cashback" she represents herself as singer which feels and fulfills project's concept perfectly. From low jazzy psychedelic vocals to dark spoken words, her singing together with Mats Gustafsson free sax soloing push music, anchored by heavy rhythm section, ahead.Mostly collection of covers, album's music sounds as if you never heard them before.
The track list illustrates project's concept well - Don Cherry "Golden Heart", The Stooges "Dirt", Ornette Coleman "What Reason" and Suicide "Dream Baby Dream" all put together make that dark, noisy, rhythmic and surprisingly attractive mix perfect listening for wide auditory from garage rock kids to fashionable clubs golden youth. Most important that music being quite accessible and even catchy doesn't make compromises, it's still same The Thing, probably they are just smiling here more often.
