Zazerac is a three piece instrumental group from Memphis that plays a combination of RnB, classic soul jazz, electronic flavored nu jazz and fusion. Current band members include: John Sanders-keyboards, Jerome Ramson-bass, and Chris 'Earl' Rivers-drums.
The roots of Zazerac go back to San Francisco in the mid 90s when Sanders led an acid jazz combo called The Memphis Mystics. The Mystics played many of the popular jazz clubs in the SF-Oakland Bay Area during the heyday of the short lived acid jazz scene. Besides Sanders, some members of the Mystics included: Nate Vinson-keyboards, Dain Dizazzo-bass, David Lapp-drums, Parry Wolfe-drums, Rod Connor-guitar, and many more.
Flash forward to 2004, and Sanders moves back to his previous home, Memphis TN, and starts Zazerac, using much of the same set list as the Mystics. A 2007 version of Zazerac performed at the Memphis Cooper Young Festival and included: Aaron Northern-drums and Troy Issom-guitar. This version eventually disbanded, which led to Sanders recruiting Tony Gonzalez on e-drums
