JAGA JAZZIST One-Armed Bandit

One of my favorite albums of 2010.

Combining electronic music, indie rock, Zappa-esque fusion and the post-rock spirit ever present in Jaga Jazzist's music, 'One-Armed Bandit' is a very catchy album, one of those records you'll play in its entirety every single day for a couple of months and then store it on your shelf until you feel you're in the mood to remember the great music you've heard.

'One-Armed Bandit' is a lot more complex (and groovier, even though that's a rare combination) than the previous Jaga albums. It's not as jazzier than the rest of the band's discography though; the synths are very proeminent and give this album a distinctive modern sound.

Pros: original music, amazing nusicianship, clear production, "Prognissekongen", the title track.

Cons: last 3 songs aren't as memorable as the others; "Toccata" is a bit too repetitive.

In resume, 4 well-earned stars, an excellent addition to any jazz fusion/nu jazz fan.

JAMIROQUAI The Return of the Space Cowboy

I dare you not to tap your feet while listening to this album.

"The Return of the Space Cowboy" is a tremendous album by British acid-jazz/funk group Jamiroquai, led by singer Jay Kay. It's full of jamming, it's hallucinogenic, and has less faux-environmental political lyrics than the band's debut, yet it still managed to raise the 'quai's fanbase around the world.

So, here's my description of the music presented here: a mix of funk, jazz and rock featuring a hyperactive rhythm section (featuring thunderman extraordinaire Stuart Zender on bass), Fender Rhodes, nice brass lines, flute and the vocal talents of Jay Kay, who sounds somewhat too much like Stevie Wonder. Recommended to fans of jazz-funk and acid-jazz.

Highlights: Just Another Story, Stillness in Time, The Kids, Scam, Space Cowboy.

What's even more ridiculous is that other PA members have already sent him PMs about that Henry Cow issue too (SaltyJon is an example) and Max hasn't answered him. JS, I'd love if you could forward him those issues.
