Prince's breakthrough album is a heady, experimental mixture of danceable disco-punk beats, rock guitar, soul romanticism, and pleasurably filthy lyrical concepts all served up in a funky mixture which is compelling from beginning to end. With musical styles ranging from the dance-funk of the title track to the acoustic rock ballad of When You Were Mine and paying a visit to every genre in between, the album sets Prince as one of the true innovators of genre mashups, with each song combining at least two different musical traditions to dazzling effect. Short but sweet, Dirty Mind is the first truly classic Prince album.
