Funkadelic's debut album features a far greater emphasis on loose, improvised jams and far less in the way of structured songwriting than any subsequent album in the band's catalogue. The influence of Jimi Hendrix'x blues-drenched psychedelic jam sessions on Electric Ladyland seeps through every pore of the album, but George Clinton and cronies include a range of other influences - there's some undeniably soul backing vocals, for instance, and there's also the first flickerings of the P-Funk mythology in some of the bizarre vocal declarations. It's certainly the band's least accessible album, and critics might accuse it of not being a very funky album, but as far as avant-psyche soul/blues mashups go there's nothing quite like it.
