Georgian (Caucasus country, not state in US)vocalist Nino Katamadze sings from she was 4. After graduation of Batumi's Musical Institute in 1990, she sung all the decade on semi-pro scene, and in 2000 started her professional career. In 2002-2003 she toured Europe,Russia and US, and in 2003 recorded this debut album.

Everyone even briefly familiar with Georgian singing culture (and trad music in whole) perfectly knows how unique it is. Strong melodies,multi-layered a-capella (usually - male) vocals harmonies and complex rhythms, but first of all - deep emotional background. Georgian music of all genres from opera to pop)could be of different instrumental quality, but usually - with excellent vocals.

On her debut Nino sings relaxed melodic songs with strong pop-jazz influence (and some nu jazz aesthetics). It's interesting, that her supporting band - trio Insight (she will continue to work with them till now)consists of bassist, drummer and guitarist only (no keyboards!).Her voice varies from almost trad jazz to Georgian folklore singing techniques with jazzy overtones. But even in more pop-oriented songs you can easily hear her classic jazz education.

I believe she wanted to attract as much different listeners with her debut release as possible, so album is very pleasant and easy accessible listening with Latin jazz,bossa-nova, world fusion and pop-jazz original compositions without complex music, but with excellent atmosphere. Just to imagine what it is like, think about Nelly Furtado's debut or some more current Flora Purim's compositions.

Debut contains two compositions, which later will become Nino's hits (their reworked versions,to be honest)- "Once In The Street" and "Olei" (even if songs' titles are mostly English, she sings on her native language). It's interesting, that her later (and better known) works will be much more explosive, their debut will stay most romantic and lyrical work.

Not her best release, really interesting album, especially for fans of Latin scented jazz with original vocals.
