SANTANA Santana III

Album · 1971 · Latin Rock/Soul

While the first two albums are super well known I rarely see people talk about the other classic era albums (exuding the more dedicated fans). This album was a huge surprise and it was quite a refreshing listen especially after listening to Abraxas so much in my life, I definitely think this album expands on the sound of the past two albums, the album opens with an instrumental track it could honestly be a heavy psych song if they turned up the fuzz a bit, the next song is a more traditional Latin Rock sounding song it reminds me a lot of WAR the song is a personal favorite of mine it starts off pretty normal before bursting into a Latin psych freak out, Toussaint L'Overture is another favorite of mine and kind off exemplifies the sound of the album, lots of bursting guitar solos and like I mentioned earlier psychedelic Latin freak outs. The track "Everybody's Everything" features bright sounding horns and amazing percussion throughout the track. I really do feel like this expands the sound of the last two albums really well, everything feels like there's more breathing room here and in my humble opinion is better then Abraxas (both albums are great of course)

RONNIE FOSTER The Two-Headed Freap

Album · 1972 · Soul Jazz

Here we have a very playful and upbeat (yet laid back) album, Soul Jazz is becoming my newest obsession, a subgenre that heavily uses organs!? Sign me up! This album I can best describe as a mix of The Meters and Jimmy Smith (with maybe a little bit of Bobbi Humphrey) Summer Song, Mystic Brew, Kentucky Fried Chicken and the title track are my personal favorites but honestly the whole album is great, it's hard to say much considering this is an instrumental album (maybe that's just a me problem) but overall it's really good, funky yet chill only complaint, wish it was a bit longer

JAMIROQUAI Emergency on Planet Earth

Album · 1993 · Acid Jazz

Jamiroquai was a band that had finally started to grow on me and I'm happy to say that, I thought they were a dorky pop funk band but over time I've started to enjoy the bands music more, this album is very, very upbeat, it's impossible to be in a bad mood while listening to this album, if you somehow didn't know Jamiroquai is Acid Jazz, an eclectic subgenre mixing funk, disco, jazz and pop and like I mentioned earlier it's grown on me a lot, this band is very poppy, I was very surprised when I saw the song lengths here average from 4 to 6 minutes with an occasional 8 and 10 minute track. The instrumentation here is on point the bass playing here reminds me a lot of Jaco, everything here blends real nicely this is some of the tightest and grooviest musicianship I've heard on a pop record, I highly recommend if your a fan of Stevie Wonder or just want something fun to listen to

GRANDE MAHOGANY As Grande As

Album · 2024 · RnB

Grande Mahogany has easily became my favorite musician of the current era, unfortunately there's nobody else who sounds like him, i say unfortunately because I love funk and soul but I guess that makes him more unique in the modern landscape of indie musicians. This album is pure love to the funk rock and psychedelic soul of the 70s while remaining really original, I can best describe this as a fusion of Jimi Hendrix, Funkadelic and Sly And The Family Stone with the quirkiness of Todd Rundgren and he's not afraid to show off his influences like the intro track being a homage to Fela Kuti the song "Angle Of The Dangle" is very energetic, Shades Ebony is very very funky and psychedelic and at the end it surprises you by turning into a reggae song, Super Rocker is pure Funkadelic/Hendrix worship and it's amazing, filled with wah effects and other various sound effects and man the outro track is my favorite, it's very dreamy and psychedelic, if you like 70s funk/psych soul but want a refreshing spin on it then please give this a listen

ALBERT COLLINS Live At Montreux 1992

Live album · 2008 · Blues
Cover art Buy this album from MMA partners
An essential (and criminally underrated) album, Albert Collins in general is unfortunately very overlooked especially compared to contemporaries such as Stevie Ray Vaughn, but AC has some serious chops and has honestly become my favorite blues guitarist. This album is a live album (obviously) and imo the songs have much more breathing room and most of the songs here are extended jams ranging from 6 to 10 minutes the songs are very energetic especially the horns, honesty the horns alone make this album worthwhile, combined with the guitar playing its a match made in heaven, the track "Too Many Dirty Dishes" as one of the greatest sax solos ever. If you want to get into AC then definitely start here, longs story short it's an Electric Texas Blues classic and should be held in higher praise

Well, I'd be lying if I said I was super knowledgeable in that era of jazz, I'm mostly a fusion guy at most I'm aware of some New Orleans stuff and Boogie Woogie

Would it be possible for me to become one? I love this website and there's plenty of artists I'd like to add here, I'll gladly give a helping hand
